Flags of our Fathers

Connections:

  1. Flags of our Fathers reminded me of many war movies. It reminded me of Saving Private Ryan mainly because it is the most recent film to be made.
  2. This book also reminded me of our own modern day war which is taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are trying to make America known as a good place in the world and establish peace among foreign countries.

Main Character:

The main character in Flags of our Fathers was Jack Bradley. Jack was the really only "normal" one out of the men who survived. I say this because he did not take advantage of his heroism like the others did. For example, Ira Hayes who was a survivor of Iwo Jima, drank a lot and eventually got so drunk he froze to death because he passed out outdoors.

How to Read Like a Professor:

Now, where have I seen him before? Jack Bradley both in the movie and in the book reminds me of so many other characters in many movies. Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, and many others characters come to mind when thinking of him. But the one who reminds me of him is James Ryan, from Saving Private Ryan. Both of these characters are very devoted to doing their job. They never gave up even though the odds were against them.

Setting:

The setting of Flags of our Fathers took place starting in Parris Island South Carolina and moved across seas to the dark war corrupted islands of Iwo Jima. At Iwo Jima the setting was very dark and rainy during the war.

Recommendation:

I would recommend this book to people and kids age 13+. The book is a bit violent but there are worse books that kids could read. The book difficulty was not difficult to read at all and I hope that everyone has a chance to read it!
